While “a chic pair of Birkenstocks” might sound like an oxymoron to some, we believe that comfort and beauty can indeed live together in harmony – especially when interpreted by one of our favourite brands to come out of the New York fashion scene. Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez have been the pioneers of intelligent womenswear for years, and they took that notion a step further as they announced their partnership with Birkenstock last September. Despite being known for their strappy killer heels, the Proenza Schouler men (they’re boys no more) have translated everyone’s favourite sensible sandals into a collectible piece of haute fashion. “Birkenstocks have always had a special place in our lives and are one of the few things that the two of us have in common from our separate and completely different childhood experiences,” the duo shared ahead of their partnership launching exclusively via Net-a-Porter this week.
The capsule collection consists of two silhouettes – a slip-on and a full sandal – with contrasting stitching playing as the signature stylistic element. Instead of buckles, Proenza Schouler relied on velcro, adding a bit of contemporary wit to the story. The leather used in the pieces is coated in high gloss, with colour combos ranging from neutral black and white and into more statement-making metallic silver and vibrant yellow-y orange. Accompanied by campaign imagery courtesy of Juergen Teller starring fire-haired Kiki Willems, the Proenza Birkenstocks are bound to become a sell-out hits. So buy now or regret later.
The Birkenstock x Proenza Schouler collection is now available exclusively from Net-a-Porter, and from a small selection of retailers (including the Proenza Schouler and Birkenstock e-tail platforms) from March 20th. Photographs by Juergen Teller.
