Givenchy: Ready-to-wear AW20

Real clothes and fantasy – Clare Waight Keller walks a fine line between both. She knows how to bring cathedral-level grandeur to her Givenchy shows, but also how to cut a suit that works in the boardroom. With French Nouvelle Vague icons like the staggeringly beautiful Anouk Aimée on her mood board, Waight Keller talked about the body language of powerful women. She dresses a few and understands they want clothes that are both intimate and fit for the world stage. This show had both. It started with a passage of great tailoring. Highlights included a dynamite hourglass black wool dress, louche trouser suits and caped wool pencil dresses (expect to see Meghan Markle in those). Dynamic movement defined the evening section with the designer using graphic cascading fringes and feathers to great effect. Imposing and impactful, this is power dressing in the 21st century.
