There is certainly a time and a place for a white cube gallery setting, but anyone who has spent a day walking around Frieze can tell you that it can get pretty darn monotonous. ‘No Space, Just a Place’ is Gucci’s multi-layered project exploring independent and alternative spaces in art. Opening at South Korea’s Daelim Musem in March, the exhibition is inspired by the varied cultural landscape and contemporary art scene in Seoul and powered by Alessandro Michele’s reflections on ‘eterotopia’ for Gucci, as well his meditations on society, gender, age, self-expression and genre – which closely align with the aims of alternative spaces.
For ‘No Space, Just A Place’, a selection of hand-picked independent art spaces have been invited to exhibit and explore their “alternativeness” as a conceptual tool in the Daelim Musem as part of the new exhibition, spanning the institutions three floors. Working in dialogue with curator Myriam Ben Salah, each project ties to the idea of utopian space and place, in which “to set new empowering narratives, dwelling on the understanding of otherness, the exploration of minoritarian identities and queer politics.” Much in keeping with the fantastical worlds presented in Gucci’s recent campaigns. Local and international contributing artists and designers will display immersive installations that question the real and blurring its lines between the future and the mythological – with an added comedic touch in true Michele style. And with current affairs looking less than magical, who wouldn’t want to jet off to a mystery Gucci-fied space and escape reality?
No Space, Just a Place Eterotopia is on from 12th March – 15th June 2020 at the Daelim Museum, Seoul.
