Marques’Almeida: Ready-To-Wear SS20

Following on from their guerrilla-style AW19 showcase in July, Marques’Almeida returned to the Truman Brewery and the London Fashion Week schedule for SS20. And they were back with a colourful vengeance. The show started with an emotive video projected across multiple screens hung down the catwalk, where girls (and a few boys) from their ever-growing M’A community talked candidly about what they’d tell their future daughters. It set the scene for what was to come, a collection for people who are happy to be themselves and express themselves without reservations.

From cocktail to quotidian, the collection catered to almost any occasion, with archive favourites making an updated comeback among countless new covetable pieces. Their signature distressed denim, upon which the brand was built almost a decade ago, is now produced more sustainably in a factory that reuses the same water. But it was the party-perfect getups that truly stole the show. Alongside the oversized attention-demanding taffeta pieces that verged on sculptural, came slinky silk dresses, tops and trousers, paired with the coordinating kitten heels finished with streams of ostrich feathers in crimson red and flamingo-cum-salmon pink. Fed up with the system Marta Marques and Paolo Almeida have been shaking things up and taking things at their own pace, and it’s definitely paying off.
