In dark times like these, it’s important to rely on people surrounding you to light up the way. This seemed to had been the guiding thought behind tonight’s Gucci Cruise 2020 show, in more way than one. Tonight, the dark hallways of the Capitoline Museums in Rome were lit only with torches handed up to all of the guests, but the spotlight was on something much more important than the elaborate dresses and feathered headpieces. With the question of how political a fashion show should get out of the window, Alessandro Michele presented his own take on what is happening in the world right now.
Fighting conservativism through the power of creativity, Michele didn’t shy away of putting his message out. Loud and clear, no subtlety or subversion necessary. Continuing the fight for gender equality, freedom and self-expression which started in 2013 with the launch of Gucci’s Chime For Change project, the designer painted the collection with support of sexual and reproductive rights, maternal health, and the freedom of individual choice. “MY BODY MY CHOICE” a stunningly cut jacket read on the back; an image of ovaries was embellished onto an evening gown – choices some may deem too risque, but we can only applaud.
When in charge of a big global fashion house, designers often fall into the rut of being complacent while creating universally appealing product. Alessandro Michele isn’t one of those people – he uses his platform to promote and celebrate a positive message beyond the clothes. Gucci truly is a lifestyle, but not just a glamorous one overflowing with champagne, jewels and velvet. This lifestyle is about standing up for what’s right, and making sure the world is a better place. All that while dressed to the nines.
