Victoria Beckham is carving out a vital place for herself in the fashion world with clothes that she describes as “wearable but still have the ability to let us dream.” In short, VB wants to be your wardrobe’s best friend (she’s working her way into your makeup bag too with a much anticipated direct-to-consumer beauty launch this Autumn). And so, with her handsome family lined up in the front row (an animated Anna Wintour seemed to wholeheartedly approve of Harper’s adorable new bob), Beckham doubled down on the polished-chic message of her last collection.
This show was a veritable shopping list of lust-factor wardrobe essentials. Every woman needs a roomy oversize jacket in a natty windowpane check. Who doesn’t crave the perfect slouchy knit? As for dresses, they came in fluid, fluted silk, with patterns inspired by vintage headscarves. Beckham played with heritage tweeds fashioning them into caped coats worn with matching seventies slacks and shopper bags. Beckham typifies the new ease in women’s tailoring, which has replaced body-con as the go-to silhouette. She stands for a new woman-friendly realism in fashion but she knows how to seduce. “It’s a vocabulary of dressing for now,” she said. She’s speaking our language.
