Alexander McQueen: Ready-To-Wear SS19

Emotion: It’s something Sarah Burton infuses into her work and is the very fragrance of the Alexander McQueen world. This is a brand with a beating heart. It’s also a brand that tells stories. This collection was based on the journey of a woman’s life. Birth, marriage, sisterhood, mourning. The focus of the collection was on romantic leg-o-mutton sleeved dresses inspired by a Victorian wedding dress Burton found in a flea market.

They came in layered with tough, leather belts, harnesses, halters and articulated sleeves. Strength and fragility in one outfit. Burton’s skill as a tailor was on show with jackets cinched with lacing worn with kick flares and trousers with daringly low-slung waistbands. They were not quite as extreme as the famous Mcqueen ‘bumsters’ but still a significant change in silhouette. Couture level workmanship is a hallmark here. The finale dresses of fully beaded lace gowns were marvels of craft and imagination. Burton brings together the dynamic forces of power and beauty but she also has soul.
