Just as we thought Fashion Week couldn’t get more eventful, there go Maison Margiela and release a new perfume. Launched as part of their SS19 show (which was btw absolutely fab), Mutiny is the first perfume released under the creative direction of our fave fashion uncle John Galliano. With six people as the faces of the scent, Margiela is defying the stereotypical idea of beauty ambassadors. Actress Sasha Lane, musicians Princess Nokia and Willow Smith, models Hanne Gaby Odiele and Molly Bair, as well as our Issue 61 cover queen Teddy Quinlivan. These Mutineers represent a whole range of profiles rarely celeberated within the beauty community, especially when it comes to perfume ad campaigns.
Beware, this isn’t one of those scents that sees a girl running through a field of poppies, thinking about which guy to kiss. Oh, no. This is a scent that encourages individuality and urges its wearer to go against the grain. In the campaign shot by Craig McDean, our six heroes tell us what they think about being different.
And then there’s the fragrance. Starting with the bottle, the perfume reinterprets Galliano’s signature décortiqué technique of cutting out the insides and leaving only the pure structure of the garment visible. Like veins running through the shiny glass, Mutiny reminds of a Harry Potter potion, powerful enough to change the world. And it does, what with its deconstructed, empowering scent of Tuberose created in collab with parfumeur extraordinaire Dominique Ropion, but also in the general message that’s coming across. It’s okay to be different, and still feel the power in your hands. Just put on a few spritzes of Mutiny, and you’re ready for it. And by it, we mean anything that comes your way.
