What’s not to love about a Dolce & Gabanna extravaganza? Mr Stefano Gabanna and Domenico Dolce know how to put on a show. This time, it all went down in New York City, the hum and incessant sirens of the city shut out as The Metropolitan Opera was in full D&G mode for the Alta Moda, April 2018 show, dramatic flowers and the sound of a heavenly choir. Well, it was a Sunday. And so the procession began, these women walked that red carpet, slowly, surely and in the most OTT gowns. Ms Karlie Kloss opened the show, turned bird-like – a magical, beautiful, rare one, of course – in the hottest red feathers that sparked from the shoulders and trailed well behind her. It was all about a big, long gown. Take up as much space as possible. Mark that territory.
Ms Joan Smalls was similarly corseted, her dress erupting, cascading with a cityscape patchwork and tulle. Princesses of New York in Milan’s finest. Forget Americans in Paris, this was Italians in New York and it felt right, supercharged by the city. NYC’s best landmarks were worked onto gowns and a whole lot of red stripes and blue stars were infused into it all. Headpieces were outrageously theatrical, as they should be, with marabou feathers flouncing, flowers blooming and tiaras glittering. The one and only Queen Naomi Campbell stole the show with a statue of liberty inspired crown. Embellished suits cooled it all down and finely tiered layers of fringing felt rightly boujee before the hint of New York baseball t-shirts that sat smugly underneath fur coats. One dress was embellished to say ‘I love Met Opera NY’. Same. Feeling that fast paced, adrenaline rushing New York City love bug. Dolce & Gabbana know how to take us there in style. Clever move, as the countdown is on until the 2018 MET Ball, with its theme ‘Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination’.
