This was not for mere mortals. We’re calling it ‘The Shining.’ All that spine chilling silver and glistening blackness underneath glittering chandeliers. Olivier Rousteing’s Balmain Autumn Winter ’18 was like a hardcore vitamin injection, a fashion high of glitz and glamour. This season of course it’s all about hope and enlightenment, designers are packing more meaning and relevance than ever before. Standing out and being powerful. And so this was Rousteing’s version of extreme power. Eighties ball busting women on patrol stalking down that runway. Kim Wilde sang, “Set me free, why don’t cha babe?” And we were off in shiny silver disco ballin’ good reflective jumpsuits, the Balmain blazer came in liquid silver and transparent iridescent rainbow. Yellow fluorescence zip lined through the collection, full throttle on bodysuits. It was all so shiny, lustrous quilted pants sat high on the waist and ripped skinny jeans were made glossy with translucent plastic wrapping seamlessly around them. In all it’s intensity there was a softness in the palest pretty pink loose jackets and sequinned pants. It was a party, a glittering underground dark disco in all the rainbows of colour lighting up to a power playlist of ‘80s hits; Talk Talk, Yazoo and A-Ha on play. The Balmain woman is feeling good, in her swaggering element. Better watch out.
