Mary Katrantzou: Ready-to-Wear AW18

A revolution of new ideas from Mary Katrantzou all added up to one of her true to form power packed collections. Bauhaus meets William Morris had combined in the melting pot of the studio and took Mary to her happy place, the sweet spot where fashion meets interior design and becomes ‘work of art’. The prints were Katrantzou complex, hot pinks, ice blues and flame reds curved, defining the graphic Bauhaus and Weimar messaging, emblazoned quite literally across the coats. Boom. And it just got better.

Deep buttoned faux leather jackets were “upholstered”, wallpaper informed the bold printed Twenties coats and matching dresses. No need to go to a gallery, we will be wearing it all next season, especially the Aubusson tapestry dresses handled with such care, a sprinkling of workmanship delivered at just the right volume and framed with black. The decorative arts, delicate flowers, rare birds, nature, trees, chinoiserie all made relevant for us with the corset-like cuts, ostentatious curves. Soft pastel dresses close to the body curvy and bristling with Pointillist perfection were the heart and soul of incredible craftsmanship using velvet micro dots and bead embroidery. Golden jacquard bodices reminded us of lampshades edged with fringed beading and sequinned dresses were cleverly swagged out as curtains. We would like to live in Mary’s house, The Cranberries’ ‘Just My Imagination’ playing. It’s all modernism and opulence here.
