When Rihanna is putting on your tiered tulle, rocking it in her bad gal ways, sneakers and sunglasses, life must be good. Even better when kween of conceptual thinking Rei Kawakubo dreams of wearing you to the Met Ball. The Rihanna and Rei reassurance. Molly Goddard regularly takes us to an undefinable place, no rules, an eclectic mashup of ideas inspired by vintage pieces and somehow delivering the fun and theatre of fashion. Queue dramatic choir singing. Molly Goddard’s Autumn/ Winter 2018 collection began in peasant territory. It shied away at first from the signature hot vibrations of tiered tulle and instead gave us a somber lull of khaki, black skirts and loose dresses, soothing.
But then, classic Molly came out to play – that asymmetric off the shoulder gold rush metallic dress kick starting the domino effect of flounces, frills, tiers and ruffles. A watermelon pink juiced up a puffball skirt, graffiti wavy line tights peeked out from under all that froth and frill. Blurring the lines, abstract dressing we’re calling it. Even though there’s so much volume and potential distraction, Molly cleverly captures an offbeat youthfulness that keeps us engaged. Her original angels have grown up a bit these days and have a darker side, somehow more knowing, less fragile. Becoming more like us. Now queue evil cackling.
