Dolce & Gabbana: Menswear AW18

There’s always a thread of Sicily running through a Dolce & Gabbana collection. Be it a yearning for simpler times, or an essay in baroque excess, an undercurrent of that small Mediterranean island always runs through. This season, Domenico and Stefano went with the excess version. A Sicilian Prince, or maybe Count? Lets be honest, if you could choose to be either which would you go for? I’ve always been firmly in the Count camp myself. In my head Prince’s are responsible, unless you happen to be the dearly departed Purple one, but then, there’s always an exception to the rule, whereas Counts are debauched and thrillingly irresponsible.

Anyway, this was a collection sumptuous with texture. The richly embroidered, baroque velvets are everything Hyacinth Bucket could ever want on a brand new three piece suite and more. To be honest, they wouldn’t look out of place hung on a palatial wall. Warm, highly saturated jewel tones, perfectly matched to your ‘imaginary’ crown jewels, danced across a collection that covered every dressing eventuality you could ever find yourself in. It’s a collection that literally takes you from the street to the penthouse. An essay in studded medieval, renaissance excess viewed through the prism of the future.
