More riffs on Britishness at Margaret Howell. It’s the fashion equivalent of a warm bath – you always sort of know what you’re getting, but it doesn’t make it any less pleasurable. Plenty to like here. A nice silhouette. There was volume. Short-sleeved shirts came up oversized, tucked into shorts that sat high on the waist. Expanded collars sat on simple white blouses, worn with sensible pleated skirts that fell just below the knee or roomy boxers that became (surprisingly sexy for a Margaret Howell show) mini-shorts for the girls.
Smock dresses were satisfyingly lightweight and came pleated at the front, whilst mini strappy-knit tops sat tight to the body in contrast. Ultimately, Margaret Howell makes clothes for clothes sake. Clothes, and looks for that matter, that you could wear off the catwalk and right on to the street, if you so wanted to. There’s no gimmicks. And, at London Fashion Week, that makes her something of a revolutionary.
