Chanel’s Greek Odyssey In Paris For Cruise 2018

I’ve learnt much of what it involves to be a Greek woman from one Sophia Neophitou, which, to be fair, seems quite simple – namely: glamour glamour glamour, babes! Obviously Monsieur Lagerfeld was suitably inspired by la Neophitou for his Cruise 2018 offering for the house of Chanel this evening, presenting a Greek Odyssey amongst a recreation of the marble columns of the Temple of Poseidon, here relocated into the halls of Paris’ Grand Palais. Sophia wasn’t actually noted in the press notes (Karl’s very discreet) rather, Lagerfeld talked of looking backwards once again to the work of Mademoiselle Chanel, and her costumes for Jean Cocteau’s production of the Greek tragedy Antigone. Not that, we should note, there was anything tragic about the above – rather, consider this if Antigone had decided to forgo her daddy issues and gone for a jolly down Mykonos. Grecian glamour on hols. Karl’s nymphs emerged first in tweed, for this is Chanel, and what is Chanel without a selection of fine tweed two-sets? This time they were loosened-up, though – tunic-like, secured with a tie around the waist and worn with gladiator boots. Naturally. These are clothes for cruising, darling, and cruising tends to rely on use of body parts. There was a nod to high summer too – swimming costumes sat underneath delicate sheer robes, midriffs were revealed (tweed boob tubes!), there was plenty of gilded gold, kaftans that billowed after the models, little gladiator-style minis. Open-weave fabrics, wide-leg plisse trousers, embroidered blouses. Dare we say – comfortable? All that the a lady needs en vacances. Karl finished with, as all good things should, a major gown moment – a Chanel toga party in the form of stunning column gowns that draped and twisted around the model’s bodies, loaded with embellishment. Very elegant. Very haute. Wear under the sun – accessorise with hunky Greek gent.
