MSGM: Menswear AW17

We love the Queen. And Penelope Keith as Audrey fforbes-Hamilton in To The Manor Born. And Debo, Duchess of Devonshire. And all those posh types, really. Those were a big part of Massimo Giorgetti’s winter 2017 MSGM inspiration – but the looks were proposed not as a womenswear show, but menswear. Which made it very different – and quite exciting, honestly. It also now means its acceptable for a bloke to wear a headscarf if he’s having a bad hair day. Which we heartily approve of – falling victim to them many a time ourselves. It wasn’t all about the aristo – there was also athleticism, which is perhaps more what you expect from Giorgetti and MSGM. Although this time there was a sly wink to her Majesty in waterproof-y jackets and quilting as well suited to Balmoral as Bond Street. The collection real became about the mixing and matching between those two worlds, which couldn’t help but remind us of the rise of the Sloane Ranger in the 1980s, when country attire suddenly infiltrated the tonier echelons of West London. It’s highly likely to do so again, given the popularity of MGSM amongst a new generation of style royalty. We couldn’t help but think how terribly dashing HRH Prince Harry would in one of his grandmother’s headscarves.
