Valentino: Pre-Fall 2017

“For me, America is still the land of hope, of equal opportunities for everybody, the place where dreams can come true,” said Mr Pierpaolo Piccioli of his decision to show his Valentino Pre-Fall 2017 collection in New York, as he did yesterday. Consider this, then, an ode to American women. The American dream. Working your way up from humble beginnings. Not that here we had humble beginnings, as such, but it did begin with a simple tea dress – tied in a bow on the neckline, dotted with florals. Because for Pre-Fall 2017 Pierpaolo talked about adding the magic to daywear, and that idea of elevation wove through the collection – touches of fur on the collars of outerwear, shirts, where the collars were tipped with coloured flowers, or those little bra tops that sat over the top of the dresses. We’re getting a sort of 1920s New York society lady. A bit sort of . And what does a society lady need but a gown? And so to finish, Pierpaolo couldn’t resist a bit of proper nighttime magic – a selection of gowns, so delicately embellished – with tulle flowers or tiny beads – that one would be forgiven for letting out an audible gasp. Sometimes a lady just needs an all-out fantasy.
