Yayoi Kusama at the Victoria Miro Gallery

Do you remember 90s TV sensation Polka Dot shorts? ‘Polka Dot, Polka Dot, Polka Dot shorts!’ chimed the intro over and over and over, so much so that now it’s all I think of when confronted with dots. And there are dots aplenty at Yayoi Kusama’s latest exhibition, as her infamous dots caress pumpkins and paintings as well as new works like the mirror rooms, all made especially for the Victoria Miro gallery. Hosting Kusama’s work, which spans the gallery’s three locations and waterside garden, takes you on a journey into the artist’s lifelong exploration of the self’s relationship to the infinite cosmos. Oooh. As the press release most eloquently says, “simultaneously infinitesimal and unlimited in scale, it allows the viewer to enter into a fully realised world.” And so, inspired by Yayoi, we’re off to live the rest of our days in a mental institute. Because sometimes, just sometimes, as Natalie says “you just need the calm”.

Yayoi Kusama: sculptures, paintings & mirror rooms, 16 Wharf Road London N1 7RW, Tuesday – Saturday 10am – 6pm, May 25, 2016 – July 30, 2016
