10 MEN ISSUE 43: ON NEWSSTANDS JANUARY 26TH

TM 43 Raf Simons Cover

Editor’s Letter:

The dark side. That was the starting point of the issue. Not some naff reference to the overhyped reboot of Star Wars, but more an examination of the subcultural undertones surfacing in men’s fashion. The underbelly of menswear, if you will.

It’s been a few seasons coming, this mood, inspired by 1980s youth cults and a gritty, post-Communist Eastern European realism, the contrast of hope with grey concrete reality. False hope, really. I kept thinking back to when I was a teenager and we all shopped at Millets, read Smash Hits and Blitz and dyed our hair black, ruining our mothers’ best towels. The openers in the mag are all lyrics or song titles – every teenager has a favourite record, and it changes like the turn of a page.

Then, something happened in the last weeks of production: I resigned. Don’t cry, readers. So my ed’s letter is a song, too, but from a gay musical classic: The Sound of Music. Gay in every sense of the word. It’s inspired by a location I visited last year with uber house Chanel. Just one of the many amazing journeys I’ve been on while helping to helm the juggernaut that is 10.

This has nothing to do with the theme. It just feels right.

So long, farewell, auf wiedersehen, adieu
Adieu, to yieu and yieu and to Sophia, too.
So long, farewell, au revoir, I’m cutting loose
Forget the champs, make mine a straight Grey Goose.

Straight? “…just the drink.”
So long, farewell, auf wiedersehen to frocks
I’m giving them up – at least there’ll be more time for cocks
I’m glad to go, I cannot tell a lie
I flit, I float, I fleetly flee, I fly
The sun has gone to bed and so must I (And several of my closest acquaintances)
So long, farewell, auf wiedersehen, goodbye
Goodbye, goodbye, goodbye

Anyway, before I fuck off, Tenners, I just want to say you’ll all be missed. As I hope I will be.

Over and out. I’m off to Devon for a cream tea.
