Remember that hat from the Sex and the City movie? The one that Samantha wears, handily doubling as a facial shield when her hunky Malibu neighbour spots her supping on some guacamole? Well, a couple of these made their way into Giorgio Armani’s Spring show, extra-wide brimmed, falling over the model’s faces. And the rest of the show felt somehow suitable for Malibu life – there was a kind of summery, beachy feel – a colour palette of red, white and blue, nautical stripes, lightweight shirts, Bermuda shorts. Who said that Mr Armani can only do greige? In the show notes the collection was likened to a “summer breeze,” imbued with a “subtle casualness”. And it was quite casual really – but the pieces were elevated in the way that Mr Armani is so good at – delicate beaded embellishments, lightweight tailored jackets, a suit in loose, semi-sheer fabric. But there was still plenty of glamour to be had too, he is an Italian at heart, after all – like that final look, a glittering full-length gown (in his new favourite blue) with a spray of red organza underneath. “Elegance is not standing out, but being remembered.” Mr Armani said. We couldn’t agree more. A fine end to a fine week in Milano.
