I think that I’ve decided that Yazoo’s Only You is the best song of the eighties. A bold claim, I know. It was a decision I made during the final walkthrough of Burberry’s Spring show, closed by the fine Alison Moyet who sung it, slowed down, alongside a 32-piece orchestra. We don’t mind admitting that it was all a bit emotional. Emotional seemed a good word for the clothing too – long, floating lace dresses, folded down silk skirts. A romantic colour palette of white, dusty rose, a mushroomy grey. The dark burgundy smear of last night’s lipstick that adorned the model’s lips. But Burberry’s girl had a toughness too, found in the louche, military jackets adorned with buckles and epaulettes or the boyish, oversized rucksack, slung over delicate layers. It was so good it had its own hashtag. Emotional, mish-mash dressing? That’s something we’re on board with.
