There’s a brand of crisps in America called Ruffles. Or potato chips, I should say. They are exceedingly delicious. Why so good? Well, they have a crinkle-cut surface, which everybody knows makes crisps taste better. So, the fan I am, when I think of the word ‘ruffles’ I naturally think of them. Until now. Now I will think of Jason Wu. Because his show, our first at New York Fashion Week, was an explosion of ruffles. As in, the ruffles you might find on a piece of clothing. Out the side and out the back, on the shoulder, on skirts, on dresses on tops. In linen, in silk. Even on jackets. Which might sound like too much, but it actually felt very modern, and kind of sexy. And, when the ruffles were made from structured raffia, like on the skirts – it even seemed a bit futuristic. But there was a bit of a Hamptons vibe too, enough to satisfy the Wu woman. The little cats eye sunglasses. Slinky little dresses with racer back. A bit of a sporty, athletic feel. Little leather shifts. Summer fur. Some floral dresses. They had ruffles too. Ruffles were the story of the day. I’ve written the word so many times it looks weird now.
