AZZEDINE ALAIA: COUTURE/SCULPTURE

It’s a bit like Where’s Wally this. But rather than Wally, it’s Where’s Alaia. The Alaia dresses. Not Monsieur Alaia. As far as we know he hasn’t town to posing like a statue in a gallery of statues in the hope that no one spots him. Seriously though, famed for their permanent collection of sculpture from across the eras, Rome’s Galleria Borghese is now staging an exhibition of ‘soft sculpture’. And the ‘soft sculpture’ they’ve chosen to exhibit amongst the ‘hard’? The dresses of Azzedine Alaia. “The work”, to quote the press release,”will be displayed with a coherence of themes and colors that will form a sense of continuity with the permanent pieces featured in each room, generating unexpected congruencies. Galleria Borghese will stage Alaïa’s couture in harmony with the Museum’s timeless dimension that, as in theater, suspends all time. Latent with all possibility and silently waiting for its scenic life, this exhibition, staged throughout the entire gallery, embodies the ongoing transformation of time, adapting and responding to the pace set by Alaia’s creations”.
