Olivier Rousteing was the first designer to dub his followers an “army.” Which is perhaps where the military undertones of his spring menswear – the first ever formal menswear show from Balmain – came from. Rousteing himself said it was explorers and adventurers, which he evidently numbers himself amongst. He was exploring technique in knotting, embroidery and macrame. He was also exploring dressing the Balmain woman alongside her men – hence the souped-up sandy coloured femmes fatales marching as stridently as the men. Main story was just deserts, in a sandstorm of suede and hardy canvas. A Mojave-hot debut that left us thirsty for more.
