10 FAVOURITE WEDDINGS: ROBERT SMITH & MARY POOLE

We aren’t always hard-hearted and obsessed with glamour, like some kind of Jackie Collins heroine. We too crave romance, as an ambition it’s up there with having nice things and developing a strong look. Our ultimate dream of course would be a love that would bind all of this together. A special someone who would share our aesthetic, and never questions our sartorial choices – of course not – because he’b be wearing almost the same thing.

This brings us to Robert Smith and Mary Poole, the original goth couple. They met at school, married in 1988 and are still together now. All those Cure hits you love? ‘Just Like Heaven’, ‘Love Song’? All written for her. In his words “Spinning on that dizzy edge/ I kissed her face and kissed her head/ And dreamed of all the different ways I had/ To make her glow”. If their lovely wedding photos are anything to go by, he succeeded in making her glow. Though underneath all that white foundation, it is rather hard to tell.
