FROM THE VOLT (SPRING SUMMER 2011)
Dear Rodarte Sisters
Can we call you Kate and Laura? Do you mind? Or is that too forward? For some reason when we think of you both, well maybe not you, more your clothes, all we can sing, in fact start humming to ourselves under our breath insanely is They’re creepy and they’re kooky, Mysterious and spooky, They’re all together ooky, etc etc etc. You have to admit, you’ve been inspired by horror quite the bit and we’re more the humour kind so really the Addams family is like a marriage made in seventh heaven.
We went to see your show in New York back in September and thought we’d send some flowers to congratulate you. It was stunning. So stunning we had to rush home, didn’t see another show all week. Locked ourselves in our hotel room with a copy of Joan Didion’s White Album and a bottle of Prozac. You see we haven’t been in California for quite some time and seeing your, what we’d like call ‘hommage’ to the Golden State has stirred up memories of happiness and happy isn’t something we like to admit feeling.
We felt like we back there driving down the grape vine, heat rising off the tarmac before our eyes, burnt out yellow landscapes with dark green splodges to our left and right. We admit we didn’t venture too far north and see the red woods but what the hell. We can always go visit again. Maybe next time we could give you a call. You could show us round? Take us on a private Rodarte customised sight seeing trip? Make a pit stop in Solvenge and play Dutch for a day? Maybe our trip could be the inspiration for your next collection? We do look rather scary in a bonnet. Whaddya say? It could be fun. We understand you need some time to think it over. Take all the time you need. In the mean time these flowers are for you. We hope you like them.
