JOHN SKELTON: PEOPLE YOU SHOULD MEET

FROM THE VAULT (SUMMER 2011)

John Skelton – The Shop Keeper, LN-CC

“I buy because I enjoy doing it more than I do anything else, if I enjoyed doing something else more, then I would be doing that.”

HAVE YOU ALWAYS WANTED YOUR OWN? HOW DID YOU GET STARTED?

“I started working on the shop floor when I was 15. I love product and had a real thing for Raf, Dries and most of the Belgian stuff, as well as the big Japanese houses such as Yohji and Comme. I knew once I started working with this product that this was the industry I wanted to work in, and that’s never changed.”

HOW DID LN-CC COME ABOUT?

“I guess I’d just been doing the hard work for other people for so long and decided it was time to do it for myself. I’d spoken about it with a few of my partners for a long time and we just decided to take the jump. He who dares wins and all that.”

NOT TO SOUND CHEESY, BUT LN-CC IS RATHER “STATEMENT MAKING”. HOW EASY IS IT TO MAKE A CREATIVE STATEMENT WITH THAT KIND OF IMPACT? WHERE JAWS DROP?

“I’ve never really thought about it. The only thing anybody should focus on is expressing a true feeling. If it is true and honest, then it will make an impact and be well received. If you are thinking about trying to make an ‘impact’ or a ‘creative statement’, then you probably aren’t very creative. If you are you will be doing it naturally without even thinking about it.”

WHAT WOULD YOU SAY HAS BEEN YOUR FINEST MOMENT SO FAR? YES, IT’S A PRETENTIOUS KIND OF QUESTION, WE KNOW.

“It’s hard to say really. My problem is that 90% of my brain and thoughts live in the future, so rather than enjoying or savouring a good moment, I’m always thinking about what I should be doing next or where I’ll be in a year, five years or 10 years’ time. It was obviously a good feeling launching LN-CC, while it’s a nice moment having dinner with my nearest and dearest. I try to enjoy every little thing that I do without getting to hooked up or overawed about the so-called big stuff.”
