FROM THE VAULT (SUMMER 2011)
This might not be the best way to put it, but we have come to the conclusion that Dolce & Gabbana “took” from Stevie Nicks her lace – well, she has loads of the stuff to spare – and gave her sunglasses in return. The lace she gifted has been encased in the acetate frames. Precious things, you see, are always encased: fossils in amber, diamonds in rock, pearls in oysters. And anything Stevie may bestow upon you should be immediately enshrined and worshipped. Obviously the above never happened. The lace is, in fact, Sicilian, handcrafted by the most nimble-fingered grandmamas you ever saw. So delicate and fine, it begs to be shown off in a sunglass-shaped display case to save it from disintegrating. But, still, we can’t help but feel that Stevie, multiple-shawl owner, has quite the collection of lacy numbers and the idea of her working with Domenico and Stefano on preserving cuts of her finest examples somehow appeals to us. They could even have their own theme tune. Rejig the words of Rhiannon a little and they could just as easily apply to eyewear. These fine frames could ring like a bell through the night, take like a bird through the sky, be like a cat in the dark and then become darkness. They could promise you heaven, other things, too. Or if they can’t, then the lady who wears them can. As Stevie put it, “sexy is keeping yourself mysterious. I’m a really old-fashioned girl, and I think I’m totally sexy.” More so, if that’s at all possible, in these glasses. The lacy shadows that form across the face when hit by sunlight just shroud our Bella Donna in yet more mystery. See, she even recorded an album and song with an Italian-sounding name. Simply put, she is Dolce & Gabbana lace shades. We think the boys protest too much when they keep harping on about Sicily. We’ll put it down to a simple slip of the tongue, though. Sicily and Stevie sound vaguely similar.
