If we were to pinpoint the inspiration behind the newest collaboration from those purveyors of some of the finest denim around, J Brand, and the master of all things fluoro, Christopher Kane, we would say that these jeans can be linked directly back to 1995. Maybe we’ve been watching too much Clueless and similar cinematic gems of late, but something about them, the cut, makes us think of cropped fluffy mohair teamed with a pair of these. The person we’re thinking of, though, is not Cher or Dionne. No matter how fabulous those girls were, being named after the biggest infomercial stars of the 1980s does not mean you have the right amount of… Swagger? That special something to pull off a pair of fluorescent green flares? These jeans have been created with one person in mind and that is the girl who you knew, when watching the film for the 27th time, would grow up to be, was in fact destined to be, a Lady Miss Kier impersonator. It’s the hair and her fashion sense that sort of seal the deal. As well as her withering attitude towards those around her. Not to put the other characters down, but she might have been the only one in that high school with something resembling a brain. Her hand-signed “whatever” is masterful. There are five styles here. A classic denim jacket, and four jean variations: a flare, a cropped skinny, a fitted-to-the-knee short and a hot pant. The ends of all of these are frayed. The denim is soft. Appears worn-in. It has a bit of that tough-Latina-girl thing to it that Amber channels in a weird way. They’d look great with, as mentioned, a pastel cropped mohair, or that stripy PE kit. She is not a “fashion victim” or “ensemble-y challenged”, she is an individual. And, yes, at times she might resemble a Monet, and from afar she looks okay, but up close it’s a mess. But it’s a hot mess. A mess to be envious of. A mess to aspire to. Cher was just bitter. If the film were to be remade (please, no – never!), then Amber would be head girl, Cher and Dionne lower than plankton. She’d also be outfitted entirely in Christopher Kane for J Brand, and have a regular lunchtime gig doing her best Groove is in the Heart.
