CALVIN KLEIN: THE WAY TO DO DENIM

image

To quote a recent conundrum that was sent into to GQ’s Style Guy, that wise sage who deals with all matters sartorial and etiquette related: “Is double denim a flat-out taboo?” Well, according to The Style Guy, “Bruce Springsteen wears double denim, and he’s the Boss.” Which we’ll interpret as Springsteen is hot, he was born to run towards the river, down thunder road, all while dancing in the dark. Springsteen is a god, and if you have an ounce of his charisma, then you, too, may try the look that is known as double denim. And if that is the case, allow us to direct you to Calvin Klein. Springsteen is a hero. Italo Zucchelli has sought inspiration from heroes. Zucchelli has done denim on denim. This is what heroes wear. It is super denim. More powerful than a prepubescent Brooke Shields whispering into a camera that nothing comes between her and her Calvins. It’s a 1990s denim. Big. Looser. Sleeves drop off shoulders, and jeans are straight and a little loose. The fabric stands away from the skin. It doesn’t cling. Instead, it follows the line of the leg and is cut so that you appear to have limbs rather than two pork products. Could it be that Zucchelli is declaring the end of the skinny jean? After all, heroes do not wear skinny jeans. Springsteen would not wear one. Even David Bowie, who sang of heroes, wouldn’t. And he was partial to a latex jumpsuit. Which, when you think about it, is a rather telling comment on the attractiveness of skinny jeans. Zucchelli is all about masculine denim. Denim for men. With muscular thighs. Who choose to wear it with a white T-shirt. It’s harking back to the days of Marky Mark with a hand down his trousers. Because when Marky Mark wore denim, you could fit your hand down your trousers without having to undo the button. And this denim is blue. It makes proper blue jeans. The colour of the sky. It looks best when worn with more denim. In the same shade. A matching jacket and jeans. Think of it as you would a suit. Denim on denim – the new suit. Why not?
