SUZY MENKES: THE CHRISTIES AUCTION
“I have never thrown anything out of my wardrobe since 1964. If I had a large open space in my home, I would dedicate it, like an art gallery, to my collection. But there is something sad about clothes laid in a tomb of trunks. They need to live again, and this auction provides the opportunity for them to walk out in the sunshine, to dance the night away and to give someone else the joy that they gave to me.”
And so, on July 11th Suzy Menkes will be doing the classy version of Ebay and auctioning off various treasures from her personal fashion archive on Christies. There will be over 80 lots featuring everyone from Chanel to Yves Saint Laurent, via Christian Lacroix, of which she is “selling more than 10 pieces from his most formative period.” All of these clothes have been worn by Suzy. Which basically means that by buying them you are buying a piece of fashion history and so should you decide to make a purchase, it should be treated with the upmost respect. A shrine with a quaffed mannequin, dressed in your chosen purchase, sat upon an altar should be set up in the corner of your room. There should be fresh flowers and lit candles placed around it and every morning when you wake you should bow a little and thank the heavenly angels for your good fortune. Namely that you managed to get your hands on whatever it is you got your hands on.

The Suzy Menkes auction will run from July 11th – July 22nd.
