“Sha-zam!” That’s what Foxxy Cleopatra, played by Beyonce Knowles in Austin Powers in Goldmember says. And it’s what the JW Anderson cruise girl would say too. There is a resemblance between the two, no? Foxxy would be all over those high zip neck tops like a bad rash. And that ruched mini skirt too. Not to mention those vibrant spots and stripes. And what are those boots but foxy? It’s amazing how J Dubz can reference the past (in this case, 70s) but create something that looks new and undisputedly fresh. The collection was inspired by the abstract paintings of Ben Nicholson who, without wanting to regurgitate my History of Art degree, epitomised British modernist art, along with Henry Moore. You can see this inspiration in the colour palette, in the previously mentioned stripes and, perhaps most importantly, the slight abraction of the shape and form of the clothes. Like Nicholson, J Dubz est un artiste.
