This season, 16Arlington’s Marco Capaldo searched for glamour in all things sinister. Held inside the Barbican’s Curve gallery, the designer’s latest outing drew inspiration from My Head is a Haunted House, a 2019 exhibition by Charlie Fox held at Sadie Coles HQ which featured everything from Winona Ryder in Beetlejuice to chilling rememberings of David Lynch’s Twin Peaks. “Meeting Charlie and Sadie and hearing about their work together, I fell in love with the beauty of the monstrous,” explained the designer. “Sometimes darkness has more depth than light.”
Stalking the catwalk, Capaldo’s models came in sharp, black tailoring with silver tinsel climbing up their necks, wispy, organza frocks that floated around their frames and fuzzy mohair jumpers that featured paintings of black dogs. As with all 16Arlington shows, Capaldo served a textural buffet, this time mainly through the hairily-good accents that saw faux fur cloak oversized bags and dress up belts buckles like weird curtains. In stepping into the shadows, Capaldo was able to create clothes that dazzled.
