What does the word luxury stand for in 2019? With the ever-changing social climate, it’s important to consider happenings outside of our little fashion bubble in order to interpret the meaning of contemporary luxury. And that’s where Issue Two of 10+ Magazine comes in. Packaged in a perfect pink box, colours splashed both on the outside as well as throughout the posters and the magazine inside. With the tagline “Everyone, Vocal, Together,” the issue discusses the current state of the world – that’s fashion, luxury and everything else – interwoven with a sense of unity. Whoever you are, there is something for you inside this wonderful box, coming to selected stockists on Friday, June 21st, but is available to order online NOW via 10 Curates. Giorgio Armani and Yoon Ahn, Amanda Gorman and Marc Jacobs, Ruth Bell and Finn Buchanan… Completely different but with one big thing in common – unapologetically themselves. Oh, and they’re all co-starring Issue Two of 10+ too.
Our three covers each represent three aspects of 10+. Finn Buchanan wears Karl Lagerfeld’s last Haute Couture collection for Chanel, as well as the fine jewellery and make-up by the French fashion house, as shot by Derek Ridgers and styled by Sophia Neophitou. Modern-day Jane Eyre wears bling – it’s Ruth Bell in Clash de Cartier (with a little latex), photographed by Rosi di Stefano and styled by, our queen, Sophia Neophitou. Old school glam (think 1980s Dynasty) is back courtesy of Saint Laurent by Anthony Vaccarello, as modelled by Dylan Christensen who is styled for the cover by Vincent Levy and shot by Carlijn Jacobs.
But who else better to explain the rich, sophomore edition of our poster-filled boxazine than the Editrix-in-heels herself, Lady Sophia Neophitou and her Editor’s Letter:
“As I sit on the balcony of my room at La Mamounia in Marrakech, contemplating getting ready for my Dior cruise experience, I find myself looking out at the bright blue skies dotted with tall palm trees swaying quietly in the breeze. The sounds of the call to prayer fill the air and I have an overwhelming sensation of how truly lucky we are to be gifted with these unique moments.
Destination shows like these give us glimpses into a designer’s mind and what has inspired and informed the evolution of the collection. The setting gives the clothes their ultimate context.
Our second issue of 10+ showcases the pre-fall experience, seen very specifically through the eyes of art photographers, and every minute detail has been captured, each moment in time frozen, to be enjoyed forever. We are also documenting in words, to further enhance the experiences we’ve had. They are all here in the box, to be shared.
Over the years, the number of these shows has multiplied and, every season, these happenings become more remarkable, with each show more lavish than the last. But what we all must acknowledge and remember is that Karl Lagerfeld at Chanel was the pioneer of these cruise moments. A true trailblazer for these magical experiences, for a long time he was the sole designer creating these destination shows. More and more brands have followed suit, but Karl was the originator. He created the most memorable dates on our calendars, all our fashion Christmases came with each and every show. Losing him this year has been a real blow to everyone. A giant, a visionary, has gone.
He leaves a legacy like no other, of course. Daniel Arnold captured his last Métiers d’Art show for this issue of the box. It turned out to be the very last time we saw brilliant Karl step onto the catwalk to take his final bow. There honestly couldn’t have been a more appropriate venue than the Met, with the backdrop of the ancient Temple of Dendur, built around 15 BC, framing this final moment.
As he strolled out with his godson Hudson Kroenig and Virginie Viard (then the head of studio, now his successor at Chanel) we could not have imagined that this would be the last time Karl would take his catwalk bow and the last time we would see him salute his dedicated audience and beloved clients. This wasn’t the last show he designed, his final being the SS19 couture collection, which features on the cover of this box, but sadly, it would be the last time we would be able to show our appreciation to him in person.
So we have devoted a lot of discussion in this issue to the honouring of this brilliant man. We have a cover story of Finn Buchanan wearing his last couture collection, a profile on the women of the ateliers who brought his epic vision to life and, of course, we have documented his glorious, golden Métiers d’Art collection. We have also included Karl moments remembered and cherished by people who knew and worked with him. They will, like myself, miss him horribly.
His legacy is too great to be able to recall every gift of fantasy bequeathed, but one of my personal favourite cruise moments was his show at the Lido in Venice, for which Karl’s attention to detail was like nothing else, truly amazing. I have to set the scene: we were all seated in cabanas along the beach, waiting for twilight, when the sky would turn the perfect shade of dusky blue, before it began. The girls walked on a wooden walkway with only the bruised blue sky, the sand and the sea as the backdrop. It was all so very magical. It brought to mind scenes from Death in Venice, his inspiration for the show.
It really felt like we had been transported into his mind’s eye and he had given us such a beautiful way to digest this collection. We saw what he wanted us to see so specifically when he was designing the collection, giving us real context. I will never be able to fully express how magical this experience was for me, but the memory of it is still so vivid.
This issue is dedicated to this giant of fashion, Karl Lagerfeld, and all the amazing work he did at Chanel. But with his genius in mind, I wanted to celebrate other industry legends and trailblazers.
We start with a true titan of fashion, Giorgio Armani. The great man has penned an eloquent and honest piece for the magazine, detailing his hopes, fears and his fashion journey so far. It made me appreciate how many mammoth moments he has had.
Next in our legends series is Rei Kawakubo. Frankly she deserves a star on the fashion walk of fame for the brilliance of her visionary approach. Her spectacular AW19 show gave me goose bumps. We preview the collection and Kawakubo tells Richard Gray about her thinking behind one of the most spectacular shows of the season. From one iconic fashion figure to another: the absolutely fearless and brilliant Marc Jacobs. He reflects upon his life, work and future dreams with his trademark wit and candour, plus we make him talk us through his 10 favourite moments of his personal style.
And finally we have the story of Azzedine Alaïa, and how the house is looking to the future one year after the great designer’s death. Alongside our photographic essay, Claudia Croft interviews Carla Sozzani about the legacy of the brand under her amazing guardianship.
Making this second issue of 10+ has been, for me, a truly magical process. This beautiful box is a place to house and celebrate and showcase all these fantastical fashion moments and adventures.”
