You’d have a hard time not having a big ol’ boogie at a Girls Don’t Sync gig. The London-based DJ quartet, comprised of Gaia Ahuja (who moonlights as G33), Hannah Lynch, Sophia Ryalls (aka Sophia Violet) and Matty Chiabi, have an energy – with each other and the crowd – that would make even the stiffest of clubbers bust out their best moves. Crafting b4b sets that draw on sounds from the UK underground as well as dance music from across the globe, Girls Don’t Sync is building a community you want to be a part of – inclusive, empowering, uplifting and a heck of a lot of fun. Making their first foray into production with the EP Code Orange, released via Fourmation Records on September 26, the girls are taking these fizzing, sample-strong tracks out for a spin in the best way they know how to – a good old fashioned UK club night. Having kicked off their Code Orange Tour at Amsterdam’s Shelter, the group is gearing up to tear up their home turf this evening as part of a GDS takeover of London’s Archives. Ahead of the show, we sit down with the girls to hear more about the EP, what’s on their rider and one set they will never forget.
1. What’s your favourite thing about DJing together?
We are a true sisterhood – a strong support system where we genuinely care for one another. We constantly inspire each other in so many different ways! Through music, creativity, confidence – the list goes on! We don’t rehearse together as a group before a show; instead, we practice individually and do our own digging for music. That’s why our reactions to each other during live performances are always so real, it could be doing a creative blend or selecting a track that connects with the crowd, that authenticity has been a core reason our sets feel so powerful.
We’re always grateful for the pinnacle moments we get to share. There’s nothing quite like putting in the hard work, then coming together to celebrate that success as a team. That shared feeling of joy creates a bond between us that runs deep!
2. What’s the best/funniest thing you’ve ever seen from behind the decks?
There was a show we did in Brisbane, Australia, and there was someone who proposed to their partner during our set, we were all so stunned ha! But it was actually such an emotional moment that we will remember forever! It’s not every day we see a proposal in the rave! To have such a moment on a Girls Don’t Sync dancefloor is definitely a big compliment to us as DJs and a reflection of how freeing we make people feel in our spaces!
3. You just released your debut EP Code Orange – what was one thing you learnt whilst making it?
In terms of process and building tracks and the EP as a whole we definitely learnt and realised the importance of trusting ourselves in the choices we were making, whilst also balancing that with pushing ourselves out of our comfort zones sometimes and leaning in to how different sessions could feel day to day. It can be easy to try and build tracks based on external factors but a major takeaway from creating Code Orange is the unified feeling the four of us have when we know something is going to work.
4. If you had to save one track off of Code Orange from a burning building, which would it be and why?
Come Get Dis has really stood out for us in terms of playing out and also how much we love it personally so would have to be that one! So, so hard to choose though.
5. Who are some upcoming female DJs you’re loving right now?
Megan Wroe, Adele Tondu, Amber Rose, Haaji Ka Halva, Skala, Phia and Miruna Ghica.
6. What’s on your rider?
Rum, Tequila, elderflower cordial to name a couple of drinks, Malibu was a recent addition by the one and only Hannah Lynch. We also have some other random bits like Belvita Soft Bakes, scratch cards, disposable cameras and socks!
7. What’s one track that always gets people on the dance floor?
We love playing Tommy MC’s edit of Ride On Time. Guaranteed amazing vibes every show.
8. If you could curate your own festival, who would be the top three headliners?
Lady Shaka! Her energy is so powerful, we love her and always have so much fun together. Our crowds would eat her up!
Alesha Dixon MC set/Mis-Teeq reunion! No explanation needed!
Effy! We absolutely love her music, it has such a driving movement to it that would definitely bring a festival crowd together!
9. What’s one set you’ve seen that you’re never going to forget?
We recently were introduced to a DJ from Amsterdam called Tins, who we booked for our Amsterdam Code Orange Tour show and wow! He absolutely blew us away! It was the first show of the whole tour and he played before us, his selections and mixing really energised us for our set to be honest! It got us so excited, we couldn’t stop dancing! Bass and drum heavy, percussive edits that unified the whole room – felt like a homage to the classic UK sounds but with his own twists.
10. What are you most looking forward to about your headline show tonight?
Connecting with our community and crowd is everything to us. They bring such an unreal atmosphere, they’re as much a part of the set as we are! We can’t wait to lock in with everyone, celebrate, dance, and create a really memorable night! Our headline shows definitely feel different, it’s our chance to tell a story through the music, build the vibe from start to finish by curating the line ups with DJs we love, and take our community on a real journey. This one’s extra special too, because we’ve got so much of our own music to play across our set! We’ve put a lot into this night, and we can’t wait to experience it together.
