10 Questions With Frost Children As They Gear Up To Play A Sold-Out Show At XOYO

There’s an electrifying, chaotic energy that follows musical sibling duo Frost Children, made up of Angel and Lulu Prost. From a family of musical talents, the American pair played the bass and drums at Sunday mass and would dig through their elder brother’s dubsteps, eventually going on to join a number of cover bands. Now, they’re headed to London as they prepare to play their highly anticipated, sold-out show at XOYO tomorrow night. The explosive event arrives in the wake of the release of their third full-length album, Sister, which dropped September 12 via True Panther/Dirty Hit. This dynamic duo has swiftly become a force, earning notable status as one of the “internet’s coolest band” according to Dazed by taking the sleek, cathartic sounds of the golden age of EDM – the Zedd, Skrillex and Krewella they grew up on in St. Louis – injecting it with a chaotic sense of hyper-online humour.

The resulting sound is pure, unadulterated euphoria: an electrifying mix of candy-coated hyperpop, screamo punk-rock and hardstyle rave sounds that makes you want to ditch your inhibitions and dive headfirst into the nearest neon light. A 14-track album, Sister delicately weaves together these frenetic strains of emo, electro and pop while exploring close-to-home themes of co-dependence, consistency and change through the lens of what Angel calls their “twin telepathy.” Tracks like Control and Electric, showcase a unique creative partnership that revolutionises this fusion of genres as they sing “Body to body, we couldn’t get more electric”, on the latter track. Their live shows are already the stuff of legend in NYC’s downtown underground; London is about to experience the full power of their intoxicating energy.

Here, we chat to Frost Children about what to expect from their sold-out XOYO show, the “twin telepathy” that fuels their production and how their upbringing is reflected in their music.

1. You’re siblings, but when did you decide to become a musical duo? Was there a lightbulb moment?

I think there wasn’t a lightbulb moment in particular – it was pretty much assumed from birth that Frost Children would exist.

2. What can we expect from your show at XOYO?

Imagine the best night you’ve ever had. Now triple that feeling.

3. Tell us about Sister; what were the key inspirations behind the album?

We’re inspired by freaks who don’t care about anything except love and movement. We wanted to make something for them. We stimmed in the studio with a lot of old Roberto Cavalli runway videos too.

4. What’s one unspoken rule you each have in the studio?

“Think smaller.”

5. If your sound was a city, where would it be?

I want it to be Shibuya 2009, but it’s more like New York probably.

6. Describe your sound in three non-musical words?

Big, crunchy, polo.

7. What do you admire most about each other?

Angel: I think every beat Lulu touches turns to gold, and he also has an awesome Depop algorithm that he shares with me sometimes.

Lulu: Angel sees music with a very unique lens, like it always has to have some sort of visual context, which is so important.

8. How does your upbringing reflect in your music?

There’s some kind of twin telepathy that makes our output extremely synchronised and saturated. When we sing at the same time you can hear it.

9. What’s on your rider?

Yerba mate, whiskey, pumpkin pie.

10. What’s next for you?

Making pop music fun and beautiful and sexy and heart-wrenching again.
