Jamaican and Guyanese singer-songwriter Amaria BB is gearing up to drop her self-released mixtape 9PM in Paris on July 11. Marking her first full-length project since 2023, the album’s blend of dancehall and R&B is set to be the perfect soundtrack for sipping a Malibu cocktail on a beach at sunset.
Having actively pursued music from a young age (she appeared on CBBC’s hit show, Got What It Takes in 2016 and subsequently The Voice Kids), her first real introduction to the media came early, laying a foundation for a strong social media presence that has now manifested in a following of 300k+. With a natural ability to command a stage, BB’s already been nominated for a MOBO award and has performed at Radio 1’s Big Weekend, despite only being 23 years old.
Fast-forward to today and 9PM In Paris is a 14-track exploration of BB’s time in France and Spain, where she spent a few months soaking up the culture and immersing herself in the music scenes. A direct reflection of this time, the work features a number of French artists from Jungeli to Rsko and tracks such as the lovelorn All of You have the fingerprints of French music embossed on their DNA.
Here, we sat down with Amaria BB to chat about being inspired by her break up, why she wanted to work with French and Spanish artists and how she hopes people will feel after hearing the album.
1. What drew you to working with French and Spanish artists this time around?
Paris has always been a second home to me. From a young age I used to go on regular trips there with my mum. I’ve always been really inspired by the culture in France and I like French music so I wanted to do something different that also felt authentic. I also wrote some of this project on holiday in Spain so working with different Spanish artists just came naturally as part of the creative process.
2. French studio sessions vs UK ones – what’s the vibe shift?
There’s no vibe shift to be honest, it’s similar. However, I would say it’s a lot more humble, relaxed and unstructured. Lots of different artists would just show up to support and vibe which became a big part of creating this mixtape.
3. What part of you your Jamaican-Guyanese roots came through strongest on this tape in your opinion?
I think throughout the whole project the Jamaican influence is there. It’s something so rooted in me that I really like to make sure it stands out across all my music.
4. Describe 9PM in Paris in three words.
An experience. Sexy. Raw.
5. What’s one unexpected thing that inspired this project?
My break up LMAO.
6. What’s your go-to track for a night out?
Officer.
7. What’s your ride-or-die travel essential while on tour?
Oud.
8. If 9PM in Paris were a cocktail, what would be in it?
Malibu and Pineapple.
9. What do you hope people feel when they hear this project?
I want people to feel insanely good about themselves.
10. Complete the sentence: At 9PM in Paris, I’m…
With someone’s girl.
