Introducing 10 Men Issue 63  – Classic, Craft, Nostalgia – Read The Editor’s Letter

Introducing 10 Men Issue 63 – CLASSIC, CRAFT, NOSTALGIA – out on newsstands this Thursday, March 26.

The men’s collections this season looked back to move forward. In hard times, there is comfort in nostalgia, with designers returning to preppy influences and classic suiting to define a new era for men’s dressing. Our first cover stars actor Manu Ríos. Shot by Pau Carreté and styled by Marc Forné in Jonathan Anderson’s Dior debut, Ríos sits down with Bailey Slater to discuss his roles in buzzy Spanish Netflix dramas ‘Elite’ and ‘Breathless’, his admiration for filmmaker Pedro Almodóvar and the “purposeful path” he hopes to take with his upcoming acting projects.

Read Sophia Neophitou-Apostolou’s editor’s letter below:

This season, menswear found comfort in nostalgia. In times of uncertainty, there is security in the past. We find comfort in the familiar or traditional because it makes us think that everything is well in the world. We desire the good old days, with less competition, less uncertainty and the reassurance that nostalgia always brings you.

Within the issue we explore how brands are resurrecting a preppy classicism, born early in the 20th century, which has been through many incarnations, from Jay Gatsby’s beautiful shirts to Tom Ripley’s immaculate sportswear or, my favourite, in the 1980s, when JFK Jr’s clean-cut, wholesome, handsome look brought preppy to a new generation. He was the epitome of an effortless all-American style that is at the root of this issue.

You will see classicism in many forms on our pages. From soft tailoring in homage to the boundary-shifting beginnings of Giorgio Armani, epitomised by Richard Gere in American Gigolo, to the embrace of preppy, infused with the unmistakable taste of Ralph Lauren and his wholesome American dream. Both Armani and Lauren join emerging labels in reflecting these sophisticated hallmarks for a modern age. Preppy has become aspirational dressing, shot through a deeply democratic lens.

At a time when the world feels heavy with the dismantling of democracy, when wars and warmongers flood our feeds and dictators reign supreme, we inhabit a place where hope and democracy, which was fought for so vehemently, are being dismantled and America, a place that was a beacon of light, a place that represented the land of the free, faces a moment where everything we knew is being questioned. The old order is not just being challenged, it’s being taken away with each executive order.

So, we look back into the archives, when life just seemed so much simpler, more hopeful and optimistic, and there seems to be a real security found in the past of sun-kissed skin, athletic jocks and the camaraderie of the masculine network, where it was very much all for one and one for all.

How appropriate that we launch 10 Men USA now with this perfect theme in mind. Dora Fung, editor-in-chief of 10 USA, has joined forces with Dan May to create this maiden voyage of 10 Men USA, with Dan as editor.

Both share the values of inclusivity and hope as well as the ability to dream and find the light in what sometimes seems to be endless darkness. Dora and Dan have created a place in their first issue where pure creativity, hope and chasing a dream is possible. That spirit is at the heart of the 10 project and is something we are all in desperate need of in these challenging times.

Dan has been part of the 10 family for the entirety of its life, having worked with me from the very first issue and for more than 12 years after that. He is now returning for his full-circle moment to edit 10 Men USA. I honestly couldn’t imagine anyone else I’d rather have the privilege of working with on this new adventure. He understands and cherishes 10 as much as I do.

Enjoy the joy and creativity in these issues, we hope we have found the light to share with you all.
