When I was but a wide-eyed tween, my parents were attempting to sell our house so naturally I thought they might appreciate me ‘redecorating’ the walls of the living room with a set of Crayolas. Needless to say, I was mistaken in that assumption. Many (many) years later, I am reminded of that act of folly by Gucci’s collaboration with the very young and very talented Coco Capitán, the Spanish artist whose work caught the eye of Alessandro Michele, who utilised her talents for his AW17 Gucci women’s collection, and whose work now forms the latest installation as part of its on-going Art Wall project, in both New York and Milan.
That’s not to say her work is comparable to that of a six-year old, more that her signature handwritten aphorisms have that same innocent scrawl to them. Only more profound and with much better spelling. And just, well, better. The collaboration doesn’t end there – Capitán’s work will also be incorporated into a whole wardrobe worth of unisex gear: tote-bags, belt-bags, sweatshirts, t-shirts, hoodies, knits and coats all take on the role of blank canvases for a collection that will be launched online and in selected Gucci store at the end of July. We’ve had our pre-orders in for months.
