To quote Joan Jett (because, who else?) “I don’t give a damn bout my reputation, you’re living in the past it’s a new generation, a girl can do what she wants to do and that’s what I’m gonna do”. Which is, of course, the theme song for cult 90s TV show, Freaks and Geeks. What, exactly, does this have to do with the house of Gucci and their new art project? Well, after spotting the work of Angelica Hicks on his Insta, Alessandro Michele has decided he wanted to harness the talents of the British illustrator in the form of some wall murals and limited run t-shirts, one of which is titled Freaks & Geeks. Ok, so maybe it’s a slightly tenuous link, but it’s a Thursday afternoon. Our brains aren’t working. Oh, and there’s a hashtag too: #GUCCIGEEKS. Launching on May 25th, these tees come in eleven different designs, with a limited run of 100 each and, in addition, Gucci will be unveiling the follow-up to their first Art Wall project they did with Jayde Fish – this time, Angelica Hicks’ illustrations will be painted across the ginormous 760-square meter wall in NY’s Soho neighbourhood, as well as a slightly smaller wall in Milan. For the Snapchatters among us, you’ll be glad to hear there will be a special geo-filter, also designed by Hicks, that will only be available within the vicinity of the NY artwork. Get snapping. And chatting. And whatever else the kids do these days.
