E.TAUTZ: LONDON A/W12

There’s always something soothing about the idea of an E.Tautz show. It could have something to do with the sound of Patrick Grant’s voice. The press release starts with a Richard Serra quote. ‘There is an imponderable vastness to weight.’ It’s a bigger show this time. They’ve taken over a room in Freemason’s hall and bathed it in a warm peach tinged light. The Richard Serra quote makes sense when you look at the fabrics. Heavy wools and cottons that hang well from the shoulder, in the way that only something immaculately, and well, weighty can. Layers of texture, check that echoes the houndstooth, the pattern of which is reflected in the knits. It’s a larger shape, especially the coats, adding to the sense of weightiness. These are, to paraphrase Patrick Grant ‘clothes of substance’.
